My name is Anna Moon and I am serving as one of the Eco Rep Fellows here at the Shi Institute. I am currently a sophomore from Birmingham, Alabama double majoring in Sustainability Sciences and Spanish. Within this fellowship, I help facilitate the events and activities that Eco Reps has to offer. Eco Reps is a student organization that allows students to collaborate and advocate for change against sustainability issues here on campus. We host six events per semester, and each Rep gets the chance to help plan, create, and host one of these events each semester! This is a beneficial way for students to come together to combat issues that they are passionate about, which helps drive this needed sustainable change on campus.
\n

Practicing leadership at monthly Eco Rep meetings

\n
One of these events that we plan to hold every semester is the Patchwork Party. This is an upcycling event that allows students to donate unwanted clothing that can be used to create new items of clothing. This reduced the amount of waste that students were producing because they could also bring their own items to upcycle. Students are able to use this event as a creative outlet to learn and continue practicing sewing or cropping clothing items, and hopefully this sparks change in continuing these practices whenever they find an unwanted clothing item in their closet. Instead of trashing the item, you can upcycle it into something new!
\n
Using the leftover clothing and crafting items from the Patchwork Party, Reps were able to successfully host the Fabricate a Landscape event.
\n

Collaborative mural made from upcycled materials

\n
These supplies helped create the mural that you will see hanging up in the Plyler Science Building soon in order to promote conservation efforts! Another successful event that we have hosted as Eco Reps was the Dos and Do-Nuts of Recycling. Students were able to learn about the Doughnut Model and how this is important for practicing sustainable behaviors. We were able to promote Furman’s Recycling Program at this event as well in order to promote more students exercising this sustainable behavior here on campus.
\n
Since I was an Eco Rep my freshman year, I enjoy reflecting on that experience as well as my behind-the-scenes work now as one of the Eco Rep Fellows. Through Eco Reps, I have been able to collaborate with fellow students to advocate for the implementation of sustainable solutions on campus. Planning and hosting these events is a great outlet for students to spread awareness and work together to make a change. Make sure to follow @furmanecoreps on Instagram to watch students advocating for sustainability through our upcoming events!
\n

\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Practicing sustainable behaviors has always been important to me, but collaborating with other students while making new friends makes it that much more rewarding.
