Student Fellowships
The Student Fellowship Program engages students in real-world, campus and community sustainability fellowships, with offerings during the summer and the academic year.
2026-27 Shi Institute Sustainability Impact Fellows
Spend your year with the Shi Institute! The Shi Institute is now accepting applications for student sustainability internships for the 2026-27 academic year. All current undergraduate Furman students – any year, any major – are eligible to apply. Fellows work for 10 hours a week during the academic year and are paid $12 an hour. Students will work on campus to lead tangible sustainability work from running the campus farm to educating their peers. Student Fellows gain leadership and collaborative skills through their individual fellowship work and through cohort learning and activities.
TO APPLY:
- Fill out our online application.
- Upload a resume and a short cover letter/statement of interest (no more than 500 words).
- Provide the names of two references (faculty or staff on campus are preferred).

- Advertise availability and recruit student renters.
- Coordinator bike pick up and returns, collect payments and rental agreements with students.
- Keep all paperwork organized and keep up to date information on the rental fleet.
- Create a plan for selling bikes that are at the end of their rental life cycle.
Promote Biking and Alternative Transportation On Campus:
- Organize and co-sponsor events that promote biking and trolley riding i.e work with FUOC to organize campus rides or coordinate a Trolley Day
- Research biking needs and barriers to biking on campus – need for shelters, bike racks, etc.
- Research the cost and funding opportunities for bike shelters on campus.
- Meet with stakeholders including Furman University Police, student groups and facilities to understand barriers to increased biking and alternative transportation on campus.
Independent Project: If time allows, there is the opportunity for the student fellow to pursue an independent transportation project of their choosing.
